Our History
In 1958, a dream of a welcoming church blossomed in Miami. Inspired by faith, Marie Faulkner Brown and a group of like-minded individuals started a fellowship that grew into our congregation.
The late Dr. Kelsey L. Pharr, Sr. hosted the first public worship service of 11 people on May 4, 1958. Three months later with an increase of 30 persons, the group moved to the auditorium of the Bethany Junior Academy for Sunday services. With denominational assistance, Dr. Charles Wick served as interim minister.
"Why "Open Door"?
We believe in following Jesus' message of inclusivity, just like Revelation 3:8: "Behold, I have set before you an open door, which no one is able to shut." Our doors are open to everyone, regardless of background or beliefs.
A Legacy of Welcoming:
We joined the United Church of Christ (UCC) denomination, known for its history of social justice and inclusivity.
Here are some things the UCC is proud of
· Standing up for firsts: From ordaining the first female pastor to fighting for racial equality, the UCC has a long history of challenging the status quo.
